Eugene Hartzell begann sein Studium bei Hans Erich Apostel im Jahre 1956, bald nach seiner Ankunft in Wien. Er betrachtete seine Studienzeit bei Apostel (1956–62, unterbrochen durch den Militärdienst 1958-60) als Beginn seiner „Arbeit als Komponist“. Aus diesem Grund sind die Werke aus der Zeit vor 1957 eigens am Ende des jeweiligen Hauptteil des Kataloges angeführt.
